Not going to available unless the boat is a documented vessel, and even that won't give you a whole lot besides ownership transfers.

Re: hin

The only "free" way that I know of would be to start by calling the person you bought it from to find out who they bought from and so forth.

You can contact the state for registrations but that will cost money (in FLA anyway, it's $15.00 per request).

You would be a lot better off if you just said where you live and how you go about registering a boat without a title.
You will probably NOT find the original owner, especially if he is dead or moved to another state and doesn't want to be found.

Ayuh,...

I would sooner think you need to find the Last Legally Titled Owner,....

Not the Original Owner.....

Yeah, you're getting the stonewall treatment from PWD...talked to someone in a cranky! It's a weird deal, they want all the titling/sales tax fees as far back as they can get them but some won't help you locate the last or original owner. If it were mine, and I have done this, I would call the Austin office, ask for the boating dept. and tell the lady you need help finding the last registered owner. She'll ask for the TX numbers on the bow...helps if you have these handy. She'll run it in the computer log and tell you when it was last registered and to who...nothing against the rules by doing this. Then you get to do the fun part...try to find that person. It's often easier to sell the boat to a relative in another state that doesn't title boats and have them sell it back to you with bills of sale dated appropriately. Then you have a clean slate, the state still gets its titling/sales tax fees when you register it and you don't have to look for 2 years for Bob Jones, Smith, Brown, etc. in a state as large as Texas. Now if you're real lucky, the nice lady will tell the last owners address/town...who you talk to and how much they help you is often the luck of the draw. Keep trying, don't give up.
