I think these are related, but thought I would get some advice on possible remedies. I have owned 86 470 for two years. I had previously been at 43mph at 4400 rpms and a 21p prop. This year I have had the boat in the water a few times. This year I replaced the starter and small fuel filter on carb. Well here is what is now happening. I am having a hard time shifting into neutral from forward and even a harder time shifting to reverse. It seems that it does not go into neutral when it clicks from forward. What I mean is that after going forward and a hard shift to neutral it still appears to be in forward. I can get it to neutral after going all the way to reverse which is very hard to shift to then back to neutral. Also now at WOT I am going 45 at 4700rpms. Is this cable problem? How do I fix hard shift and do I need to go to a different size prop? I am :( confused!!! :( :(

I see two issues....
You changed the fuel filter,+ the motor has More Power Now......
And, your lower shift cable is Shot.. Replace it.....

Re: higher rpms and hard shifting

what happens if i let it go alittle while, any major damage or just inability to shift. Should I change to a new prop with possible 19p? How heavy is outdrive? Is it hard to take off. Looks relatively simple. I have never done or seen one off. Should I replace all bellows once off or is it easy to take on off?
