On my 1986 50hp Mariner, at WOT I'm getting 18-18.6 volts out. At idle I'm putting out 14.3-14.7 volts. I'm sure the reading is accurate. Could this be a rectifier issue?

Re: High Voltage

I believe your motor was never equipped with a voltage regulator. The extra charge is just absorbed by the battery.

What you're reading is normal.

Re: High Voltage

Unregulated systems (rectifier only) typically run quite high system voltage. This may in fact cause voltage sensitive electronics like GPS and locators to shut down. While the battery typically can handle these voltages, very long high speed runs may cause battery overcharging and subsequent loss of water. Therefore, its a good idea to monitor battery water level. If the high voltage is affecting electronics, Radio Shack and other electric stores can provide a voltage regulator to install in the power lead to each device.

Re: High Voltage

are you testing this with a digital multimeter or using the hull mounted guage ?

Re: High Voltage

Finally got back to this problem. I'm testing with both the hull onboard gage and a digital. Still get 18+ volts @ WOT. Its shutting down my locaters. I went to the local Radio Shack and asked about an in-line voltage regulator. The girl behind the counter gave me that deer in the headlight look and a shrug of the sholders. Does anyone know the correct part name or where else I can find something like this?

Re: High Voltage

I went to my local auto parts dealer and asked for a inline voltage regulator. They could supply me one from a car, but couldn't tell me which lead goes where. Maybe you'll have better luck in the states.

Re: High Voltage

Thanks MercFan. I see if the Napa store in town has one.
