High Thrust or Standard Outboard?

I have a Bayliner 192 cuddy and am looking for a kicker for it.
A buddy suggested an 8 hp high thrust engine but I have seen people with 21 foot boats who have standard 8 hp engines and are quite happy with them.
I beleive my boat only weighs about 3000 lbs or so. It will be for fishing and backup power.

So should I go with the high thrust or standard engine?

Maybe even up to a 9.9 standard engine. Everyones thoughts appreciated.

Thanks,
Daryl

Re: High Thrust or Standard Outboard?

That depends on what kind of performance you are after. High thust motors have more favorable gear ratios to swing bigger props. Four blades in that kind of service provide better forward and reverse thrust. Certainly you can get by with a standard motor but until you tried both you would not know if you are really happy with performance. High thrust eliminates the guess work. That's what they are designed for.

Like has been said.

Standard motors work OK and you can get a high thrust prop for them, but they still don't work as well as high thrust models.
