High temp warning sounding off

I have a 2006, 50HP Mercury, 2 stroke. Today we were in the river and had the high temp warning alarm sound off. I immediately looked back and saw that there was still water flowing from the pee hole. Did not appear to be running hot, but I shut it down anyway. After a while, I turned on the key and still heard the buzzer. To make a long story short, I found that if I have the motor tilted slightly upward, the buzzer will sound. Any ideas on what this could be and if it is an easy fix that I can do at home? Thanks in advance.

Re: High temp warning sounding off

Instead of guessing, it is usually less frustrating to use systematic troubleshooting methods to determine the cause. With the help of a shop manual, you should first determine whether the warning is caused by a defective sender, defective wiring, or actual overheating of the motor. A multimeter is the tool that you would need.

Having said that, one could guess (and it is only a guess) that you may have a problem with the wiring if the tilt effect is immediate (tilting causes the wiring to move and short the circuit) or a problem with the water intake if the tilt effect is delayed (motor needs time to overheat). A better guess would depend on how far you have to tilt the motor to affect the warning alarm and how consistent the effect is.

Just my thoughts...

Thanks for the input, but I just figured out that the alarm I was hearing was the low oil alarm. Stupid on my part, but at least I figured it out.
