hi guys ive been fooling around with my 16 foot glass boat(older v hull).i have a 19p vortex prop on a 1982 90 hp. evinrude.ive tried several differnt props and also raised the motor on the transom.as far as i know the motor is tuned correctly.i will look into this further.the best i seem to be able to get is 5000 rpm at 43.9 gps.ok so the big question would be ,would a high rake prop such as the ballistic s/s help by getting more of the boat out of the water? it seems to me that my main problem seems to be a conservitave hull design.i realy dont know the weight of the boat but cap.is rated at 625 kg.any thoughs on solas props.

Re: high rake s/s

First, the numbers you give with the 19P is not possible...these numbers produce 4% slip..out of the question for about any prop on any rig.
I think your tach is about 300-400RPM off as you have a known GPS speed and a known prop pitch. Figuring a low slip ratio of 10%, the RPM should be around 5400.
As for the Ballistic, it (in MY testing) has very little bow-lifting capabilities. It tends to vent much sooner than say, a Raker, Turbo, Stiletto, etc..
Solas props are OK, but most are not built for a high concentration of bow-lift...the Scorpion is, but won't fit the V4 gearcase. You may want to look at an Apollo, they have a bit more Rake, and should be better bow-lifters than the Ballistic.

Jacking height...Go up as far as you can without venting greatly or start getting water pressure fluctuation.

first let me say you sure type fast. im still at 1 1/2 fingers.lol. ok so the tac reads ok at low rpm im positive. when i hooked it up i hooked it to the 3rd screw down on the elect strip.(on motor). may be i have it hooked to the wrong one?? the motor does run really nice to my untrained ear.

The Apollo is a new design, and will likely replace the Rapture over time. Yes, the flo-torqII and XHS hub systems are interchangable.
The Titan is a standard use, SS prop. Not really in the class of Bow-lifters...it has bow-lift, but is classified as an "over-all" type.

ok thanks a lot i will see if i can get here for good price if not i can get of of i boats i guess.do you lose any speed by going from aul to stainless of the same pitch? stick with 19p or go to 17p?

Re: high rake s/s

That depends on prop design...usually a stainless prop pulls a tad harder, but it may have more lift resulting in less wetted surface and "may" be faster....it's really a test..
If you're at Max RPM now, stay with the same pitch.

We may need to find a Raker or Lightning Jr if you don't want to try an Apollo, but I think it would be a good choice.
The hustler would be an OK, all-around alum prop, but it will have slightly less bow-lift than a stainless of good quality.

Re: high rake s/s

new twist to the prop saga. went out with the manual and found out somebody previous to me had detuned the engine.got it back to base and runs a lot better ,will take it out tomorrow to finalise . the motor was orginally a canadian coast gaurd motor one of two on a boat. would they have purposilly detuned it?since 1990 or so its been sitting in a corner of the local fire hall till i bought it last year from a city employee
who never ran it atall.

Re: high rake s/s

Could be....In the late 70's, every V4 Johnson we bought (We were dealers) had max advance set 3-4 degrees retarded. we broke them in that way, then slowly moved them up about 2 degrees PAST max advance due to our higher altitude.
Don't try that at sea-level...you won't like the out-come...

Re: high rake s/s

ok kenny i put it at base, and instantly it stsarted up much better.i will get a mechanic to properly set it up for here which is not much above sealevel.690feet i think. the guy i will get to look at it has a test prop and the river is just down the road so should not be too hard to get it spot on.best i could do without the proper equip. is close which is much better than it was.of course this may change the prop selections also.lol :D
