just bought a 1986 baretta 120 hp in /out mercruiser. First couple times out went fine. recentlly ive been hearing this high pitch squeel. this happens most of the time at idle speed when i tilt the motor up or down. when it squeels usually i just put it in nuetral and then back into forward. Whats causing this. any suggestion on where to start?

another ? i have is the boat seems to hesitate from idle to wot. its like a have to finess the throttle back and forth in the midrange throttle before it will go wide open...possible throttle cable?.....keep in mind ive never owned a boat before and i dont have a manual. ne 1 know where i could find one, or download one for this boat or motor? thanks in advance

Re: high pitch squeeling

I think you can order factory manuals at www.mercurypartsexpress.com Get one if you plan to repair or maintain your sterndrive. Everyone else on this board will tell you to.

As for the squealing, you probablly have a slipping belt. You can adjust the tension on it to stop the squealing, but most likely you are due for a replacement belt. Over time the pulley surfaces can become rusty and will eat up a belt in short order.

You can get a replacement belt at a auto parts store, just take yours in and they'll match up a replacement.

Also, if your pulleys are rusty, clean them with a wire brush and/or high grit sandpaper and repaint them.
