High oil pressure

2008 4.3 TKS with alpha 1

Anyhow, change the oil, and splurged a bit and went with Royal Purple. My owners manual says to use mercruiser full synthetic 20W40 but I could only find 15W40. Now however until the engine has been running for 20 minutes or so, anything over 2000rpm pegs the oil pressure gauge. I don't remember the boat doing this last year, and was wondering if I should maybe switch to a lower weight oil before I start blowing seals...

Re: High oil pressure

When you say "pegs" what is the reading?
60 should be good, 80 is high. over that, and you can wash the bearings.
It could also be a gauge miss reading, or sender. try using a different gauge attached directly to the engine. I have a gauge in the engine compartment and a light on the dash.

Re: High oil pressure

It seems to top out at 80, and doesn't exceed that. It'll drop down to about 60 at idle or when it's been running at 3K+ for a long time (20 mins +).

Re: High oil pressure

You should be fine.
I change my oil pump one time and and pegged a factory gauge, it ran for for many years after that. it had about 80 when cold. I think 60 is normal for a 4.3 so 80 cold seams a bit high but should be ok.

Yeah I was concerned as the guage only goes to 80. I'll take it easy for a while and see how it goes. I don't really waterski or anything with it, mostly just cruise around...next oil change I'll go with something a bit lighter just in case though.

Edit: Huh, a google searched turned up this...
