I bought a used 50 hp that has high oil consumption- have nto run on a lake yet to find out how much is high. What could be the problem and anything to do less a complete rebuild? Is that worthwhile? Engine seems to run fine? I only paid $150 for unit

Yukon, Welcome to the forum :D

Check the compression reading on all 3 cylinders.
If 1 is low, you may have worn bad rings which is letting the oil Blow by. If the compression of all 3 is within 10% of each other and they are above 120 lbs, then the powerhead internally is fine.
If its good, then it could be something as simple as a leaky gasket.

If the compression readings are close to each other but the compression is less than 120 or so, this means that all the rings are worn, indicating a high number of hours. If this is the case, and it still runs smooth, just keep an extra quart of oil around and top it off periodically. When you're bored in the off season, you can get a round to doing a rebuild. For the the price you paid, it was a steal !

Get us the compression numbers and we can go from there......

Thanks,
Nav

Re: High Oil consumption BF50hp

Finally got the right compression tester fittings
I did the test cold, held open throttle and cranked read highest reading
top to bottom
110
130
150
so big difference, I know this motor has high hours and probably worked hard and put away wet many times.
What would be the best thing to look at doing. A complete rebuild, new rings and piston ??
Thanks for the advice

with such a large compression difference
i would think you are looking at a total
rebuild.
if you are not mechanically inclined to that
degree, i'm sure you could part it out
and get at least twice what you paid for it.

for $150.00 you must have realized you were
not getting a motor in perfect working order.

Re: High Oil consumption BF50hp

I total realized the motor was is poor condition for that price as the month before I bought a brand new one for $7500. This one was for parts. It is on a 30 ft river boat and I need more power and thought twin 50's should do the trick. I do not mind spending a bit a of money on this motor if it is worth while. As soon as I get the second set of controls of ebay I plan to hook them up and give it a go to see the diffenence.

I would like to know how good a mechanic you need to be to rebuild a Honda 50 or if I am better off to pay someone.
Thanks

do a leakdown test. may be something as simple as a leaking valve. a leakdown test will tell ya what part of the cylinder sealing has gone bad.
