High Idle and cuts out after 1 hour???

I am just going to throw out everything that is going wrong. Sorry so long! I bought the boat in June and have not been able to use it 1 time. Boat is a 2000 21i 350 Mag. Also has had a ECM conversion kit. Fuel Pressure is good, compression is good. The boat is idling at about 1400 rpms in neutral, and when put it gear drops down to around 1100 rpms. The boat seems to go good for around 45 min to an hour and then will start to spit and sputter some when u try to get on the gas. It will never cut off, it just will not take a load and will not go over 3000 rpms. I dont know if that has anything to do with the idle issue?? (bad gas....I have ran 3 cans of sea foam threw 1 full tank) Back to the idle, Maybe too much air? The small hole on top of throttle body under the cap where air sucks in at, If you cover it about 1/2 way with your finger the rpms drop to where they are supposed to be. It does not cut off which makes me think there is air getting in somewhere else or the ICM. The ICM was replaced. Look at the pic (Is it the correct one?? Part number for the correct one??) Throttle body was cleaned as well. There is a really loud air sound on the engine when in neutral but goes away in moving. Could I be missing a muffler on the throttle body? Every sensor has been replaced on this boat, fuel filter is good as well. Will a CPU diagnosis help fix the problem?? Is it something only a computer can fix? Also, I have included a couple pics of the engine. What is missing?? I know I am missing a cover over the top of the engine and a bracket for alot of the wiring? This is how it was when I bought it. Thanks for any help guys!!

Wow. First off, your idle is double what it should be. If that is a small hole I see in your IAC that would probably account for it. That needs to be replaced. The pic of the TPS may be the right one. Post your engine serial number. Without it it's going to be hit or miss to help diagnose your problems. What a rats nest of wires but luckily you have come to the right place. Be patient. The experts should be here shortly.

IAC. Idle air control. Sounds like the culprit to me.

The serial number you posted isn't a Mercruiser one. Have you had a code reader hooked up to see if any fault codes have been registered? The only reason I thought IAC was it looks like the normally teeny hole has been enlarged.

I know i just found out its not the right number when i called mercury for a part number. Its what was wrote on the paper work so i dont know. Its a 5.7 350 mag. I have had it to a scanner but no codes came up. Was going to give it to a mercury mechanic monday with a cpu if i cant figure out anything before then. Thanks.

Do you know the part number for the correct one?

No I do not. But in your photos there are numbers on it. Try with those. Or plug what looks like a hole that's in it, and see if the engine runs different. Or tap on it as the engine is running and see if it makes a difference. Not everything shows up on a computer, you know?

Here are some more pics of the IAC and throttle body. Does every thing look okay? I noticed the TPS is not a Mercury or Quiksilver. Is that okay? Is was purchased from carquest.

I just tried starting the engine with the IAC pulled out but plugged in. It did not move at all. Could it be stuck? Could this be why too much air is coming in giving me high rpms. If so, could this be a bad IAC or something to do with the ECM?

It's probably on the plastic cover or riveted to the block just above the starter. BUT, being an inboard, I'm not really sure!

Re: High Idle and cuts out after 1 hour???

Going by what you described & the pics. I took a long shot & found IAC #803149. Found it @ www.mercruiserparts.com!
I went with 350 mag Alpha/Bravo serial group OL010019 - OL339999. Usually you get pics on certain components which helps alot. The pic you posted of the IAC & the 1 they show LOOK the same, unlike other IAC's that are pressed onto the mounting flange on other models.

This IAC will store a failure code in the ECM. You can change it til the cows come home but until you clear the code, nothing will change. Also, the IAC won't have any effect on a runabilty issue at higher RPM.

Your chasing atleast a couple of issues. I would start with getting the Merc tech into w/his scan tool & make it idle properly. Then go for the rest of the problems. If you don't stop shifting @ 1400rpm your gonna be putting a shaft in it!:mad:
