High Idle? 86' 110 Johnson V-4

This motor has ran well.......having a problem with high idle. Recently purchased! Compression around 130 on all cylinders.

I will run it for 10 minutes or so, and any time you go to neutral it will idle at 1200 rpms and will not go down until you let it sit in neutral for 5 to 10 mins and sometimes not at all.

Also, anytime I crank it on the hose it will idle at 2000 rpms, have not ran it long enough on the hose to see if it will idle down......

Is any of this normal?? What are the first things to check w/ this type of problem?

The engine idles with the main carb butterflys closed. If the throttle linkage is keeping them slightly open, the idle will be high. Pull the air box cover off and visually check the main throttle butterflys. Adjust the throttle cable by the side of the carbs if they are slightly open. The engine should idle at around 650 in gear in the water, around 950 in neutral in the water, and may idle at 1200 when running out of the water on the garden hose.

you need a service manual, and do a linc n sinc.
