Hi, im trying to fix up an old boat i was given thats been sitting on a farm out in the weather for a decade or so, anyway im new to boats and am trying to rewire it all as the old wiring is completely shot. The stator wiring is corroded all the way up to the sealed part of the stator, ive cut a bit of rubber away to see if its fixable with no luck, is it possible to remove all the rubber to get to where the wires are soldered on and for it to still work? and my other question is the part that is under the stator, white plastic thing attached to the throttle and has wires coming out going to the ?cdi maybe? has the same problem, i think its called the ignition trigger but unsure, is this easy enough to replace the wires from where they are soldered on aswell or am i wasting time trying to save a few bucks and its never going to work?

Also my serial number is 8050149 if that helps at all.

Cheers for any help you can give.

Wiring issues with vintage Mercury Motors is very common. Its funny, you can look at vintage OMC motors and the wiring is perfect, yet the older Mercury motors seem to all have rotting issues.

I am afraid there is nothing you can do to save the stator and trigger assemblies...especially if the wiring is rottted (insulation falling off etc...) all the way up into the assembly itself. Sometimes you can save a portion of a wire when the rotted part is at a connector or something, but in your case it sounds like you are chasing the inevitable. New parts are difficult to find for your motor, but many good used parts can be found on the popular auction site. I will say to always check with IBoats before you look elsewhere for new parts.
