have another puter question for you....
got in a nice laptop yesterday that is preloaded
with NT4.0 workstation. before it will open windows
it prompts you to log on... username listed is
admin. but have no idea what the password is??
how can one bypass this? re-load NT again?
would hate to over-write anything on it, just
wanted to test the unit prior to selling it.
the laptop is part of a SAN connectivity mgr.
made by/for Compaq SANworks.
sorry to bug you... working our way up to a 6pack now! LOL

Mellow Yellow, There are ways to get into the computer to save the data and get around the security. Since you just want to test the computer, just install NT4 again, but into a different directory than the original. This will run the security from a different directory. the software programs that were loaded will not work, but you can make sure it works and you won't have to worry about the password. There are other ways to get into the system I would not post, and would only send them if absolutely needed. The next user will need to reload the operating system anyway and will want to wipe the hard drive anyway.

Re: hey scoop!

thanks Scoop,
scared to re-load NT, there is propietary s/w
on this thing for use in SAN mgmt. I'll try
to get help from Compaq, it's new (demo) and still
has warranty. it's a real odd item that will most
likely sit on my shelf for 6 months, so figured
I could use the laptop in the meantime. think
I'll buy a new HDD and pull the one that's in there.
then I won't mess up the s/w by mistake
thank you anyways sir!
M.Y.

Re: hey scoop!

Sorry there wasn't a good answer. If the unit came from Compaq as part of the SAN, then the Compaq installer probably set the password. they may be able to contact him and get it, or they may have a default Administrator password. I defnitely would nto reload NT then if you need the SAN software to work. Putting in another hard drive would do the trick.
Most of the demo equipment we get in has come directly from the last Customer of Compaq's or IBM's. the software on the hard drive is udually been messed up by the previous customer. Compaq may have a restore CD since it is an eval.
