Hello again,

Well I got the 1980 85 horse johnson outboard home an put on the boat. Started/ with earmuffs runs like a top. Now my problem... My tilt and trim worked great, new motor was just installed when I bought it. Went up and down great, left it all the way up for a couple days, what can I say had to go to work. got the battery and hooked it up, then went to lower the motor and it was stuck!!! Found the manual release and lowered it. Raised it again stuck again. Now all the sudden will not go up or down. I did loose some fluid but I didn't think much? It looks like a simple set up but I am stumped. Any ideas fellas? Maybe bled? stuck valve? am I looking at more big money?? Maybe I am missing some thing easy??? I did call the shop I bought the motor at he said to take the big flat plug out of the, looks to be the valve body down by the cyl. He said to pull it out and put some screw in to it and that should release the stuck valve. I did what he told me minus the screw thing. Nowhere to screw in to??? I know if anyone can answer this it's you fellas!! Thanks so much for any and all help!!! Brad, Trish, and kids

:(

If I remember correctly. pull the big slotted plug port side of trim unit, install a 1/4 20 nut and tighten. That will unlock the valve. remove plug, remove nut and reinstall plug. refill resivour. Dennis

There is no place to put a nut on. Hyd. is a simple process. I am feeling really dumb now....will not go up or down. Manual does not say anything on type of fluid to reinstall. just johnson evenrude brand??? is it hyd oil, tranny fluid. or like brake fluid?? looks like tranny fluid red. Thanks again Brad

Re: Here we go again Need help!!!

Hi just wanted to throw my 1$ of advice in. I recently had tilt and trim trouble. There is a lot of advice available under search. My problem was as simple as adding fluid. The tilt and trim fluid is fairly inexpensive, Wal-mart sells it. Make sure the lock is off. When I recently ask for help there was a answer given about hydrolic lock up that results from to much presure on the cylinder. Take the time to find that posting , it has a lot of simple explanations on it. It was some time in march and was listed under my old name hossken.

Brad N Trish,

A couple things to consider.

1. Do you hear any "clicking" when you activate the switch? If not, you have electrical troubles. More than likely a connection or relays.

2. Do you by any chance have the trailering bracket deployed? It is the bracket that swings down and rests on the transom clamp bracket.
