Tohatsu 9.8 has no raw water coming out the “pee hole”. Intake is clear. Path from bottom of muffler below pee hole is clear (water drains down and comes out intake and lower holes)
Other than impeller, could there be a simpler problem? Like blockage, but where?
Engine starts on first pull, runs smoothly, never showed any sign of overheating when problem was noticed, but I obviously can’t run it for more than a short test time (to see if water comes out) like this.
Any ideas before I pull the lower unit to check impeller?

A simple check would be to poke a piece of wire in the "pee hole" while running. Many a time I have seen spiders or other bugs build nests in the hole when motor is not in use, and water won't come out. It's worth a shot to see if it may be as simple as that. Poke around with a wire and see if the water starts to flow out again. If not, might be the impeller is shot and just not pulling up any water.

Metal pee holes compared to plastic ones tend to clog faster, worse if dealing with salt water, OB not being flushed with fresh water at all or for very short time periods. Insert the red cannula of a W-40 can and spray an overdose of product.. Let soak for some time with cannula inserted in.

Start OB and check if clog has dissaperaed, if not while OB is running insert cannula back and forth till clogg clears itself. Can perform that process now and then to maintain pee hole clog free over time. The good thing about using a plastic cannula is that won't scratch pee hole internal wall.

Um. The 4-strokes are plastic pee ports on the end of a rubber tube, so spraying gunk in there is unnecessary as there is no metal to corrode at the pee hole. Of course, there is the tube connection at the motor, but that is several inches away from the pee hole.

It’s looking more and more like it’s either a bad impeller, or the “riser” water tube going from lower to top end is clogged.
looks like I need to drop the lower end either way to diagnose further and fix.
thanks for the responses.

Sometimes the clog is found at powerhead's external short peeing tube, right were rubber hose connects to. Assume will need to remove OB cowl disconnect hose, poke something inside tube, connect hose, start OB and check if with green light and ready to go. This procedure is faster than pulling lower leg down to have a look..
