Hello,
First of all ive searched forum but all the links provided by Don S died,
Im looking for replacement for my UJoints, according to the Mercruiser catalogue I have "805536A2" looks like permalube Ujoints which are quite expensive but Ive found info that there are also automotive replacements,
Should i choose permalube maybe? which one are better?
Thanks for your help!

Permalube means the joints are sealed better to help keep water and other things out. They do wear out over time and must be replaced. Could be a long time depending on how many hours the boat is used and if maintenance is done (boot replacements)

Greaseable joints need to be greased because the seals are not that good. They will last longer then permalube because they can have the grease replaced.

Most folks don't do maintenance so Permalube is better. For those of us who do maintenance were getting less options. Same goes for the gimble bearings.

Sierra 18-2097 is the equivalent, and a good U joint. It comes with a plug or zerks so you can decide if you want lube it. You can find them for <$56 if you do a web search.

I insert a zerk, remove the caps and bleed the cross with extra grease. I can get a pump or two more than the mfg added.

I'd avoid automotive U joints. You can find ones that will fit the yokes, but the cross bearing diameters are smaller than the OEM or Sierra. This means less bearing surface, which is critical in an outdrive U joint.

Found a U joint at Mercstuff and its their part number 8030 (made by GLM) and sells for $37.95 and our greaseable
Measured cup 1.079 and inner shaft 0.701 diameters

The older Merc number 75832T1 which also crosses to Sierra 18-2174

Do measure

The 2097 is a Permalube that cross references to the original Merc p/n you stated. As I stated you can insert a grease zerk instead of the pipe plug and make it greaseable. Sierra 2197 is for the older, greaseable Merc U joint as alldodge stated.

Either will fit and work fine. alldodge's reference in post #5 seems a good choice. If I had known it I would have used them for the price. Key is the .701" cross bearing diameters. Marine U joints measure this size. Automotive U joints like Spicer or Dana will fit your yokes, but I've measured the cross diameter at .63". This is 16% less needle bearing area. This is a huge difference in an outdrive application where the bend angles are much more than in a truck's drive shaft.

I'd avoid them unless you know the cross diameter. This is hard to determine unless you order them and measure before installation. I had to call Spicer engineering to get this dimension. .63". $15-$16.

For a relatively few dollars more either Sierra or alldodge's GLM will give you peace of mind.

Not that I am arguing that there is no difference between the two, but I have been running the *smaller* ones for the last four years, as have many many others. You do not hear much complaining of exploded u-joints.

I just used the list from the Adults Only page on u-joints. Don't remember which I chose - I think it cross referenced to Moog.

SPICER# 5-1306X
ROCKFORD# K1306
DETROIT# 7260
NEAPCO# 1-6300 / 1-6301
PRECISION (MOOG)# 315G
TRW (FEDERAL MOGUL)# 20030 / 20030P

My setup pushes the HP for a 4.3, which ain't saying all that much. I never drop the throttle and I don't run in the big briney or massive lakes where I might broach the prop hopping waves. Always pretty much just roll a throttle into a mid-range. I don't expect to ever fail a u-joint.
