+1 with tblshur and will add; take the linkage off the carb and see if it moves further closed. With the engine in neutral it doesn't take much of an opening in the carb to have it go high rpm.

Re: Help!!!!

Would you be talking about the short linkkage on the left side of the carb?

We don't know which year your Johnson is so it makes it a little difficult. It would be the linkage or cable which move when the throttle is moved. You want to make sure that when it is at idle the carb is all the way against the stop screw on the carb. It could also be that the idle screw has been turned to far in and needs to be backed off.

thats a good motor! well worth keeping if its overall health is ok. check everything that moves when you twist the throttle or pull the choke, and as mentioned, have a look down the carb throat to see what going on when you check everything. maybe do a read of leeroys ramblings too.

Re: Help!!!!

You can lay these motors on their side, just make sure it is the portside that you lay it down on. You don't want to lay it on the shifter or it might break off.

NWcove i had a 1985 15 hp Johnsons on another boat, it was ten years old when i got it and i used it for 14 years,i did mess up and let it set with gas once and had to rebuild the carb, but it ran great the day i sold it, SOOOO i decided to take this 1988 back to the Marine shop and let the professionals take care of it,.i got such a good deal on what i bought i dont mind spending a few bucks and hope it will last me a season or two and if not ill buy a new outboard,i appreciate all the responses ,this board is great,Mentioning Leroys Ramblings ,i used it today when i was having a problem putting the rope pull starter back in,i forgot to take pictures of that when i pulled it out.But by looking through Leroys rambling that was solved ,thanks again guys, ill report if the shop figures it out .

Re: Help!!!!

Well after a trip back to the mechanic the motor is running like a clock,i had them rebuild the carb then i instaled it and a nerw fuel pump and gas lines before i took it to the shop and when i got it back the little black plate on the top of carb was broke and i think they did it on rebuild but i couldnt prove it so i said nothing, they replaced that at over $100 bucksi also must have lost a washer on the cam roller or what ever that roller is on the carb linkage, spent more on the outboard then i want to but when i heard it runnning it made me feel better,no to finish the rebuild of the boat, thanks guys for all the advice. Cost more to take it to the shop but im less frustrated,Stripers watch out here i come lol
