Ok guys/gals I have a silly question.........maybe almost stupid. I have owned a boat for 4 years and it was an all-weld aluminum hull with tiller handle 25 hp Yamaha. I got used to driving this one for so long I thought driving a steering column boat would be easier.

I purchased a 91 Skeeter with a 175 Black Max Mercury on the back. This is a lot of motor compared to my old 25. Anyway, when I bought it, I put it in the water (well should I say BEFORE I BOUGHT IT). It ran like a champ. It's got a jack plate, hydraulic steering, hot foot......the works.

I put it in the water last night for the first time with the wife and when I put it in forward the boat rose up in the front and would not come down no matter what I did. Was I trimmed too low? Too high? I just couldn't get the boat to plane out. Ugh!! It was so embarrassing! I couldn't drive my own boat. What am I doing wrong?? It was as if the motor just dug into the water and I could not get on step. I had my jack plate lowered all the way down as well. Please help!

Thanks in advance to all who answer.

Re: Help!!

The motor should be trimmed all the way in when first starting out. Gradually increase speed and after it gets on plane start trimming it out a little at a time. You will notice it picks up speed without touching the throttle and gets easier to steer. Take your time and learn the boat before you go hauling tail.
