Motor 1983 Merc Classic 50hp 4 cylinder
Compression 121 123 125 122
Symptom Motor idles great in barrell in driveway however it dies upon acceleration.
Things done so far.
Great spark all 4 cylinders.
Brand new plugs.
Carbs rebuilt
Fuel Pump rebuilt
Brand new Fuel Tank
Brand new Fuel line and primer buld (heavy duty not the cheap stuff)
Primer bulb pumps up hard.
Floats set to 1/4" upside down.
Brand new needles and springs (seats are non adjustable or changeable)
Carbs rebuilt mixture set to 1 and 1/2 turns out.
I am thinking all the throttle linkage screws are way out of wack some of the screws are turned all the way in some all the way out and one smack dab in the middle.
I can't set the timing according to procedure in manual because I can't put the motor in gear (it dies immediately).
This motor has no problems in the lower unit.
Just changed lower unit oil (no signs of intrusion)
Just changed water pump good fat heavy stream of water coming out.
Any place in particular is should be looking to trouble shoot? What in the world is causing this? If it is the throttle linkage is there any way i can reset the screws to a factory default or something that might work?
and yes this is a lack of maintenance issue I just bought the motor and have slowly been reviving it.
