Can anyone help me?

I'm working on a 140 4stroke Johnson with an over heat problem.

I changed the thermostat and impeller.

The top of the engine is getting hot while the bottom is staying cool.

What could the problem be?

I'm thinking I have to pull the power head to get the valve train off to have a look though i really don't want to have to do this.

Is there a valve or something that diverts water on these motors? i very new to Johnson/Evinrude and am a little nervous about taking the timing chain off and such to get under the valve train. Plus I don't have a manual.

Do I have to pull the power head to get the timing chain off to get the valve train off?

Any insight would be much appreciated,

Thanks,

Re: Help

You have a serious need to get a shop manual if you plan to work on the motor. BTW it's really a Suzuki.

Re: Help

Then it may be a blockage somewhere. Is there much water coming out of the overflow half way down the shaft. How is the tell tale stream ???

Re: Help

I got some info on Suzuki 140. Not an OEM manual but we'll see.
I'm going to pull the powerhead today to see if I can find a blockage under the valve train.
