Great site. First time to post. I have 3 waverunner 3s (all 650s - 90, 91,92)that I'll be performing maintenance on to get them back up and operational. Had them in storage for the last 3-5 years while remodeling a new home and finally getting some of my free time back.
Brought the first one to the house to get cleaned up and running. 1990 WR3 650. Had to replace the reverse and steering cables as they were frayed, rusted, and wouldn't move. Moved next to the engine. new oil, plugs, gas, battery. Ready to start it and nothing. Engne won't turn over. Starter tried to turn the engine but no luck. Can see the engine torque as it tries to start. removed the plugs and can see piston movement. tried a couple more times thinking the jet pump side of things might be corroded a bit and just needed that extra punch. Then the starter quit and am only getting clicking from the black box.
Decided to take it to a mechanic for a diagnosis. The guy fiddled with it for 5 minutes and determine that somthing in the jet ump had corroded and was frozen. That it's common on WR3 and polaris when they sit around a long time with out being used. says it'll cost 400 to fix. and then said if I hosed the starter another 300-400. Decided to take it home and save the heavy labor fees and do it on my own. I'm mechanically inclined and have the yamaha service manual. Replacing the cables was fairly simple so I'll give it a shot.
Any tips or gotchas from you pros out there that have performed this work? What's commonly needing to be replaced? Figured I would pull the jet pump and follow the manual inspecting what it says needs inspecting and find the faulty part(s). While I have the jet pump out I assume I can try starting the engine to confirm it's functioning. Then follow the troubleshooting guide if no starter crank. Sound like a good game plan?
Thanks in advance for any input.....John
