Help - Yamaha 2 stroke oil reservoir issue

Wanted to get some input from you folks on this issue. I have a 1999 Yamaha 200hp two stroke. Started to get an alarm on Sat. - it was a constant beep. Discovered that the reservoir that is attached to the powerhead was down to the bottom line - once I added oil to that the alarm stopped. I had plenty of oil in the remote reservoir (in fact had added half a gallon a few days earlier. Started by pulling the reservoir - and checking for clogs in the supply lines and filter/screen - found none. Had my wife turn the motor over while I held my ear to the pump that is located at that remote reservoir - it was running, but only for 30 to 45 seconds - and the oil level at the powerhead didn't change. Pulled the hose from the "out" side of the pump and started the motor again - pump runs, not oil pumps out.
So - - does that convince me that the pump is bad or is there something I'm missing.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Help - Yamaha 2 stroke oil reservoir issue

I have twin 150's 1997 and i'm having the same problem. it's been a while I just keep filling the resevoir on the motors till I figure this out. someone told me it was the little lever on the back of the engines which tells the system your engine is trimmed up . I replaced them they were broke but i'm still having this problem. If you figure this out before I do please let me knowI will do the same.
Thanks

Re: Help - Yamaha 2 stroke oil reservoir issue

I have one follow-up question to add. I see in the shop manual that there should be an "emergency switch" on the power head where one could transfer oil from the remote tank to the engine tank - I can't locate that switch. Could it be that the 1999 version of the motor doesn't have that switch?

There is a small in-line oil filter mounted on the remote reservoir tank, and is the likely culprit if the pump is operating correctly. It is in-expensive and easy to fix yourself. It won't show any obvious signs of being clogged.

I have a 1999 200HP motor and the remote oil switch is mounted on the very back of the engine, it is a toggle switch that is located on the black plastic piece that is located between the two banks of sparkplugs.

TomS - thanks, you are the first to give me a landmark to look for. Even my very patient wife couldn't locate that damn switch. I will give it another look this weekend.

No problem, went looking and found a couple of pics that might help as well. Not mine, but you get the gist.

Arrow on the filter goes in direction of flow, so it should point AWAY from pump towards the engine.

Flow goes from the bottom of the tank to the pump.

mixing two different brands of oil will also gel the oil causing clogged filters

Re: Help - Yamaha 2 stroke oil reservoir issue

I had this same problem (2003 150HP 2-stroke) Sunday with the reservoir on the engine running dry with plenty in the reserve reservoir. To fix it, I just poured oil directly into the engine reservoir. However, the engine was run with this reservoir completely empty.

I was going down the lake at WOT and the engine started backing down to near idle speed. I put the motor in neutral as it continued to run and then was able to throttle back up, for approximately 50 feet before it throttled down and died. I turned it off. I am a novice (first boat). I checked the batteries (ok), fuel (ok), spark plugs (ok and tight) and oil (ok in reserve tank)...I was under the impression that the oil in the reserve tank went directly to the engine, I didn't know that another tank was fed from the reserve tank, therefore, didn't check the oil in the tank mounted on engine (unfortunately). I put the cowling back on, started it up and it was running rough, but running. When I put it in gear, it would die. I then started it with about medium throttle in neutral, and it sounded very rough and would die when I put it in neutral to then put into gear. I took the cowling back off and traced the oil line because it sounded like something wasn't getting oiled. Discovered the oil tank on the engine and saw that it was empty. After I finished cussing, I put oil in the tank directly. I started it up in neutral and let it run to try and lube it up. Progressively over the next minute, the engine started sounding much better. Let it idle for 5-10 minutes. Kicked it in gear and off we went.

However, when we stopped some time later the engine wouldn't turn over. Check oil and it was ok. Primed bulb and tried again. Nothing. Waited about 10 minutes and it fired up. Had the same thing happen one other time. This is intermittent, as sometimes it fires right up.

What do I need to check in order to see what damage has occurred to the engine? I don't want to keep running it if I am going to continue to cause more damage.

Nick, you need to start a new thread on your motor with all the info on yours.
Start with compression to see if cylinders are sealing

Having similar problem with my 115 yamaha 2 stroke. No oil making it to engine tank AND toggle switch does not activate pump. How can test the pump to see if it is shot ? Looks like Brown & Blue are the hot leads. If I jump them to the battery should I hear the pump activate ?

You can bypass the pump directly to battery to see if it works I dont recall which color lead is hot but in this case it doesnt matter the pump will turn on if it works ,it may run in reverse if you cross the leads. When I look to bypass something electrical I use a make shift wire lead with a in-line fuse just in case.

Re: Help - Yamaha 2 stroke oil reservoir issue

I have 1986 yamaha 175 and have same problem. I either pump manually or pour it in. I check the filter and pump, i figured the pump was alright since i can manually pump it. I was told that it was computer chip that needs replaced, don't know where to look for that. Any thoughts?

I had to take mine into the shop (replace 4 pistons, re-sleeve 1 cylinder, re-bore 3 cylinders) and while it is there I am going to have them figure out what is wrong with the pump. I'll ask them about the chip when I go get it and then let you know.
