Hey all I have a 1989 yamaha 40 ETLF. Its hanging on the back of my pontoon boat. Which I bought within the purchase of our lake home. It hasn't been ran in the past two years. I want to work on it this weekend and have a few questions.

1). Where would you start?

2). I want to replace the plugs. What would you replace with?

3). I want to replace the water pump. Going with factory.

4). I want to replace the lower unit oil. What kind? How much?

5). Anything else?

Thanks in advance guys and gals!!!

Sounds like you need to find a service manual for your motor if you plan on working on it yourself.
It will save you lots of time and money

You will need to drain and clean fuel tank, lines , fuel pump, and carbs to keep from causing motor problems from lean fuel/ air ratio. Old gas will cause lots of problems.
But you may want to start with a compression test to make sure it is worth messing with

Go on-line for an operators manual and repair manual for that motor, drain entire fuel system from tank, filters, carbs, clean or replace spark plugs with only specified NGK#--- plugs, order water pump kit and replace(not all that difficult for anyone with average wrench-turning skills), Walmart for Marine Lower Unit Oil and hand pump(easy 10 minute job), replace gasket/washers on lower unit drain plugs, Walmart for water/fuel separator filter(easy 2 screw installation on transom/save you lots of trouble with stale/contaminated fuel), Walmart for Stabil Marine(use all the time), Yamaha Ringfree(on line or boat dealer) all the time. It may sound like a lot to do, but after you order/buy all the parts/oil/etc. that you need, can be done in 1/2 a day, then you'll be good to go! Good Luck!
