My tires are totally rotted by the AZ sun and I need new one. The question is one that I'm sure has been hashed out many times but I search and search and came up with nothing yet.

My boat sits at dry storage at lake Powell and it's only 2 miles to get it down to the water and then back to storage. So what tires do I "REALLY" need to put on it, the spendy st tires or are the regular ol car tire?

The second part is what is the best way to take care of the tires so the don't rot again? The AZ sun is a bit harsh but what should I know so I'm buying tires every year.

This is my first boat so I'll have a lot of questions and I want to say thanks in advance.

Re: Help with trailer tires.

What tires you buy depends on how close to the maximum GVWR rating the boat and trailer is. If you have a 3500# trailer and with the boat loaded with gear the actual weight is at or very near 3500# I suggest you bite the bullet and install ST tires. If you are nowhere near the GVWR, in your case you could get by with passenger car tires but you need to keep them aired up to the maximum sidewall pressure. To protect tires, treat them with any of the rubber protectants and then buy tire covers. You can make them out of vinyl if you have a sewing machine but they are relatively inexpensive at camping and boating centers. The unfortanate thing with them is they have a tendency to (as Croccodile Dundee would say) "go walkabout". People cannot keep their filthy mitts off other peoples stuff.

Re: Help with trailer tires.

I've seen people take a small piece of plywood and lean it against the outside of the tire to protect it from the sun. Usually seen done on campers so the inside is protected from the camper itself. Your boat would not shade the inside as well so pay close attention to that.

An old piece of plywood wouldn't be as likely to be taken.

UV rays deteriorates tires, any simple covering will help protect them. i have found, shop the local tire dealers, it is much cheaper than buying online and then having the mounted.

Once again thanks to all and I have just ordered the new tires. I also seen some double tire covers for a few bucks and figured I would give it a go.

any rv dealer or rv catalog will sell you tire covers that fit all camper tires. the same ones will work for your boat
