Help with Steering, Please?

Hello all,

I have a 1978 Ranger tri-hull. It has a MerCruiser I/O.This last weekend, while on the lake, I lost my steering.

I checked the cable, the steering wheel moves back and forth freely and the cable moves the rods in the engine compartment.

The outdrive is not connected to it and just swings back and forth freely. There is now some grease on the outside of the outdrive, that wasn't there before.

I was able to limp it back to the ramp by tying a rope to the outdrive and steering it manually.

Sounds like the splines on the upper swivel shaft/steering lever have finally worn out. Was the drive 'sloppy' before?

The repair on this is a new swivel shaft, gimbal ring and steering level. And a few hours to install it.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes the steering was sloppy before. Where would you recommend getting the parts for this? also, I don't have a manual, would you happen to know where I could get one of those as well?

Again, thanks and have a great day!
