Help with shift cable

Can anybody give me a step by step path to follow for adjusting the shift cable on my motor? I have a 1994 Mercury 40 hp on a 1994 Tracker Super 16 pro v-hull. I have recently replaced the lower unit on it and also cured a problem with it being stuck in forward gear. (thanks to another post on this forum) It is now working fine when in forward and idles fine in neutral, however when I put it in reverse it makes a grinding noise and produces little to no rearward thrust. I am a novice when it comes to motor repair but with the proper steps to follow I can get it done. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Help with shift cable

With the cable disconnected, does the motor shift cleanly into both forward and reverse?

If so, you should be able to put that lever in the center (neutral) detent, set the shift lever to center, and adjust the cable so it drops on the pins with nothing moving.

hope it helps

Re: Help with shift cable

This is gonna be a stupid question, but how do I disconnect the cable? From the shift lever or at the motor? Then, how do I shift it manually? I apologize for my ignorance in advance.

Hey EastTexas-

I posted in your other thread, maybe you didn't see it. Where did you find the answer for your original problem?

And where are you at? I'm in Jefferson...
