Help with oil leak

I have a 70HP Johnson motor that leaks oil at the propeller and would appreciate any tips on how to to do the repair myself and what tools are neede for the job. <br />Thank you.

Is this gear oil or is this exhaust residue?Are you trying to fix something that ain't broke?

Hi hondon.<br />It's definitely oil, I can see it drip on the bottom part of the motor. I was able to remove the propeller but I'm not too sure on how to remove the shaft. I removed the four bolts inside the housing but still can't get to the part where the seals are. I'm thinking that a gear puller will do the job but I'm not sure.

O.K.. Now that you have convinced yourself that this is a gearcase leak ,you will need a puller to remove the bearing carrier.You can get adequate pullers from your local rental shop. A standard threeway puller with a long pull bolt will do the trick ,but what you use to hook it to the carrier gets a little dicey.Rent or buy one with long hooks that will grab thewebs of that carrier and not the outside.
