trim clicks at solenoids in up and down. I took the trim motor off and tested it. It only works after I mess with the center point (manually turning it with my hand) on the trim motor. This is a trim motor for an 87 glasstream ski boat. The number on the trim motor is 88183A11. Does this mean that it is bad?

more likely the brushes are stuck in the holders. can be disassembled for cleaning.

Where are the brushes located? Is that the square things with springs behind them?

Yes carefully take it apart and clean the brush holders. Also fine sand paper on the armature where the brushes ride on it. If there is a great deal of "junk between the copper contacts on the armature try to scrape it out. Shake or blow out the casing to get rid of accumulated metal dust.

you can also try to stretch the springs out a little, that helped a lot on mine when they started to go. Eventually the brushes will need to be replaced if they are worn too much

i cleaned the brush holders and put it back together. The trim ran great for 10 sec. ENough time to put the drive down. Do i need new brushes or a new motor?

Did you test the solenoids? They "click" but are they energizing the motor?

Ok! Just asking. Your on the right track then!
Did the pump keep running? It should be able to run up & down til the battery goes dead!
Don't discount the switch either.
To isolate the switch, unplug the harness & hot wire the solenoids.

solenoids click in up/down position on throttle and only in down position on trim. nothing in up position.

i didn't try the pump too long on the battery as I thought it might overheat but it sometimes would slow down while connected to battery.

isolate the switch? how do i do that?

Do the noids click every time? Or just every once in a while?
At the pump. Unplug the harness, round plug, 3 wire (red, green & blue). Connect a jumper wire from 12v & touch it to small green or blue. Don't matter right now. Green is down, blue is up! Make sure your big wires have a good connection @ the battery & the pump. Your positive red may go to the starter, that's fine if clean & tight.
Good Luck
