I found an old penn 77 reel spooled with lead line in the shed the other day. How do you guys rig it up when you lead line.. IE what type of leader, knot used to attach.. Also, the old penn doesn't have a drag adjustment on it, just the clicker. Is that a big deal?

Re: help with lead line rigging..

rigging lead line is fairly simple...the drag worries me though, due to the fact you need to use a floro leader if in clear water...
Slide the outer braid back about an inch, exposing the lead core...clip the inner lead off. take a small needle and thread your leader material...run the needle into the line about 1/2" above the end of the braid so the needle comes out the end of it...pull the leader about 8-10" on through...fold the hollow piece of braid back against itself right where the lead inner core ends. With your thumb and fore-finger, pinch the fold at the point the leader exits the folded end which will be the end of the braid pointed back torward the rod. With the line pinched, take the tag-end of the leader and make a small loop back to where you have it pinched and pinch this loop with the same fingers...take the rest of the tag end and wrap it 7 times around the folded braid..after 7 wraps, put the tag end back through the loop you have pinched and pull. When it's tight enough to hold the folded braid, pull the leader from both ends until tight, then clip the tag to about 1/8". This will be as strong as the leader material and won't tear out. I like to put 1 or 2 drops of CA (super glue-thin) on this and I've never had one tear loose.
