Help with IO Trim/Tilt

I've got a 97 Chapparal with a 5.7L Volvo Penta IO. The IO unit will not go up or down and I do not hear the solenoid clicking when I press the til/trim button. The trailer button will cause the outdrive to go up.

When I probe the blue & green wires on the outdrive solenoid, it has voltage on the red wires but no voltage is activated on the blue or green wires when I press the tilt/trim switch. Because of this I figured it was an electrical problem.

After looking at the wires up by the tilt/trim switch, I found a white wire which was disconnected. Unfortunately its not obvious where this wire is supposed to go to. Any leads to a wiring schematic would be appreciated.

The white wire is coming from the wiring harness and it appears that it wants to connect ot the blue, green, purple or red wires that go to the trim tilt switch. Does it make sense that this white wire could be a "kill switch" type signal for the trim unit?

Any help is appreciated.

Re: Help with IO Trim/Tilt

Do you have an LK or an NC in your engine model number. Boat year doesn't mean engine/drive year.
Also, do you have the SX style drive or the 290 style drive. Both were used.

The engine is the 5.7 GL-SX and I guess the drive is the SX style.

You really need to get manuals for your engine and drive if you plan on doing your own work. Hopefully the 2 pictures below helps you locate your problem.

Re: Help with IO Trim/Tilt

Don,

Thanks for the schematics, do you know a good place I can get manuals. Unfortunatley the schematic doesn't show the loose white wire I'm talking about. It comes from the in-line connector which is between the til/trim switch and the main wiring harness up under the dash. It comes off of the til/trim switch side of this connector. I modified the picture but I couldn't post it.

Is there a "kill circuit" for the tilt/trim? If so this white wire may be part of that.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Help with IO Trim/Tilt

Do you have a gauge on your inst. panel, and if you do, does it work?

No white wire is part of the trim system at the instrument panel, and no, there is no Kill system for the trim/tilt.

Re: Help with IO Trim/Tilt

I do have a tile sensor on the inst panel, but it stopped working ~3 months ago when a wire going to the sensor onthe out drive broke. I haven't hada chance to replace that yet. The white wire may be part of the inst panel circuitry. I'll try to trace it down. When I press the tilt trim switch up & down, my guess is that one signal coming from the swith will go to 12V. I'll check that and see if something is broken/shorted there.
