The ice maker will not stop filling with water. Opened the freezer this afternoon, had to pull like he## on the door to get it open, dam thing had icecycles from top to bottom. After a couple hours of thawing and mopping I disconnected it and removed it from the freezer.

This thing is obviously electronically controlled. My question is what turns the water on and off. I didnt notice any kind of float switch.

Well, since you didn't mention the Make and Model of your setup, only guess's can be made at this point.
I'd start by checking the water solenoid valve (where the water line connects). If the valve is stuck open, you'll have a skating rink. Meter the valve (with the water shut off) and the unit calling for water. Some of the units open the water valve for a predetermined amount of time, to let in the water. This type has a small adjustment screw at the control head to vary the water level in the tray.

Re: help with ice maker

Its a GE TFX25JR, TFT25JR side by side, with water and ice in the door. The only thing on the ice maker anywhere is on the plastic front it says "Ice Maker". The front cover comes off with a slight pull to reveal two gears and an adjustable screw. There is also a 4 prong electric cord (unplugs from freezer wall) that enters into the front of the ice maker, Im assuming its driving the ice dumping mechanism/water valve timer.

With manual water valve on, water continues to drip out of water hose in freezer wall (tray water source), ice maker unpluged and removed.

Im thinking the water solinoid valve is not closing. But with the water in the door there is probably two water solinoid valves?? Where would each be located?

Quote "With manual water valve on, water continues to drip out of water hose in freezer wall (tray water source), ice maker unplugged and removed."

I would check to see that the rear solenoid (for ice maker) is working...it should allow water to flow when voltage is applied to the 2 terminals and stop when the voltage is removed. The valve is Normally Closed until voltage is applied. The valve can be mounted at the rear top or bottom. A 2-way splitter at the bottom rear would supply water to both the ice maker solenoid and the water in the door solenoid. Water in the door has a micro switch that closes, supplying voltage to that solenoid when a glass depresses the loading door arm. I'll bet on the ice maker solenoid has either something lodged in the valve or is hanging open. The solenoid valves are cheap and easy to replace.

Every ice maker I've owned that malfunctioned was due simply to ice build up where it was not supposed to be.

In every case, a thorough defrost job did the trick.

Re: help with ice maker

Mine quit on our 25' side by side a couple of weeks age as noted by DJ. The fill tube was plugged with ice. I hit it with a hair dryer for a few minutes and problem solved.

Re: help with ice maker

The majority of refrigerators today are equipped with an automatic icemaker. The water valve supplying the icemaker is a key component of the icemaking system, and it should be the first thing you check if the icemaker's performance is erratic or if the icemaker stops working.

When the icemaker calls for ice, its switch closes an electrical circuit and energizes the solenoid-operated water valve. This allows water to flow through the valve and into the ice cube tray. The water is frozen into cubes, and the cubes are dumped into the ice bin.

Re: help with ice maker

I have a GE TFX25JR, TFT25JR side by side, with water and ice in the door. The ice tray doesn't fill with water to make ice and the water drips out of the front door our, comes out really slowly. Any suggs?
