I picked up a late 70's Evenruide 4hp to use on my 17' sailboat. Motor starts and runs great. Got to lake yesterday and started out. When you open throtle above 1/2 way, it sounds like metal on metal rubbing. Runs perfect until 1/2 open. Then it is like something is rubbing. Took off cover and ran but could see nothing. Is there something under flywheel that could be only rubbing above 1/2 open???

Yes, there's coils, points, condensers, in that area, but one would think that the flywheel would hit them constantly at any speed if they (coils) were located improperly..... unless the main bearings are worn bad.

Do this..... Remove the spark plugs, then turn the flywheel by hand as you increse the throttle setting. Hopefully that will reveal something.
