Hello,

I have a Johnson 50hp 50ESL73R outboard that has compression issues. The top cylinder is at 60psi and the bottom at 160psi. Any thoughts as to the problem?

Is it worth having the top or both cylinders bored out and to put the .030 o.s. rings in them?

It will start and run but I want it to run well.

If I do the cylinder pull, how much would it cost to have the boring done.. approximately?

Thanks

Pull the cyl head. It may be something as simple as a blown head gasket.

Will do. Plus I will be able to take a look at the cylinder walls and see if they are marked up.

Thanks.

Cross your fingers. It might be the gasket. But there is a good chance the piston is trashed. It wouldn't be the first one to do it.

Either way, DO NOT continue to run it. It will get much worse, very quickly.

Uggg... major problems. Top piston burned, cylider scored, head pitted. So, what to do... sell for parts, get it bored and a new piston, how much will that cost... or, buy a new power head... what will that cost.

Thanks for the help..
