Hi,just upgraded myself from a 12ft clinker style hull with a 8hp yam to a 15ft chrysler striper with a chrysler 50HP EL (s/n 507F9B),both boat and engine were well looked after and i was told that the engine has ben upgraded but i do not know what that means. No manual for engine came with it and the engine has not run for 3yrs but was winterized when last put away, i have just pumped all grease nipples and after cleaning the plugs it now starts on the button but after about 30 seconds or so it cuts out,the fuel is 50/1 (well that is what i have put in).lots of water spray comes out of the two holes at the back so i assume that the impeller is working fine i had i working today in a tank i do have mufflers but i am unsure were to place them (over the srew hole marked VENT or over the water intake),also how do i operate the choke i see that it is electric but i cannot see how it is operated,my engine controls are original crysler that go with the engine but i am unsure what the toggle switch does on top of the handle(says up/dn)what the pull up button under lever handle does and also next to key/ignition is a switch which seams to rotate that also i am unsure what it does, any help would greatly accepted and also is there anywhere were i can get a user or service manual for this engine.thankyou for your time...RAY

With the key in the on position you push the key in to engage the choke. You should here the solinoid engage. Your motor is actually a 1989 Force motor. I boats sells slymor service manuals for that motor that should help you. Here is the link

Force manual

Try and find a mercury dealer over there. They will have all the parts you need. If that motor has not been run for three years and was not winterized correctly you should do the following.

Remove any old fuel

Remove the carb and take it apart and clean it as good as you can with carb cleaner.

I would rebuild the fuel pump and the carb if you can find the kits over there. They are pretty in expensive and arent that hard to do.

Re: help with a crysler 50 EL force

cheers eurolarva we have a mercury dealer in bembridge(isle of wight 'uk'),i was told that the engine was winterized correctly and looking at the condition of the boat and engine and the fact that the owners had the boat for 8yrs i have no reason to doubht them. It would turn over very slowly if not at all until i took the plugs out and cleaned them turned the key with plugs out and boy did that motor spin(with a spay coming out of the plug holes),plugs back in and it started 1st time(the second i turn the key)and has done everytime i try although i have not had the boat and engine in the sea yet(planned for this weekend weather permitting).i do not seem to need the choke(but that was only because i did not know how to operate it)is that normal or is that why the engine cuts out after about 30/45 sec's.the engine has had very little use and has not had a hard life i have been reading the other articles concerning force 50's which i have found to be VERY helpful but i am now slightly concerned as to should i keep the engine or try for a merc/yam etc as i wil be using the boat around the iow with my 2 kids and need a very reliable engine(am i just panicking) i am not going to thrash the motor so if looked after it should be fine?!!i think the sooner i can get a maual the better!,i have past this forum(website)onto my mate as he is impressed with the response and info from you guys.
sorry if i have repeated my first question, thanks again.

Re: help with a crysler 50 EL force

Any motor can be a lemon. Force has had a bad name however if well taken care of it should take care of you as well as any other motor. Seems to me the 50 force motors tend to have too much power to the prop so you may want to be careful going from slow to Wide open throttle. I have never heard of a cold motor not needing to be choked. Your engine killing after half a minute or so could be fuel related. Any old gas left in the float bowl of the carb could have left crud in there or when you are priming it the needle valve may not be seating correctly.

When you have the plugs out the motor will have minimal compression that is why it spins so easily. When you do this you need to have the plug wires attached to the plugs while the tips are grounded or you can fry the electronics on the motor.

If when you mentioned the Sea is salt water you will need to get a flush kit for it and run fresh water after running it in salt water. You want to make sure all salt is flushed out of the cooling system.

As far as a service manual I would think you can get one from Mercury. If not a factory one see if they sell the Syloc manual or the Clymer. Both are pretty good manuals.

Re: help with a crysler 50 EL force

i've just taken off the carb(number on carb WE17C7/88 and in the float chamber had lots of brown bits in but i have a concern!!,undoing the nut at the base of the float chamber a spring came out but nothing else(so i am thinking mmmm so what can it be doing),inside were the spring sits are 2 tubes(1 sits inside the other),the thin inner one is not center and it is pressing against the outer one,so my question is..is that outer tube supposed to drop out when the spring is taken out or is the outer tube supposed stay lodged inside via the inner tube pressing against it.i can strip, diagnose and rebuild 4 stroke car engines but i am new to 2 stroke boat engines,so i am thinking maybe the needle is jamned open letting plenty of fuel in and that is why it starts without any choke every time.may i just say that the engine looks brand new both from outside and inside so maybe they could never get it to run right and this is why...but i could be wrong!!!

ray:
The thin tube you are referring to is for the idle jet in the carb. It is supposed to be against the side of the main nozzle as you described. The outer tube (main nozzle can be pressed out of the carb if you are doing a major overhaul, but I would not reccomend that. Just get a standard carb kit as eurolarva suggests and do a good job of cleaning passages, etc. The force motors I have had have all started pretty easy. I find I need the choke if I haven't run it in a while, or if the weather is cool.

Re: help with a crysler 50 EL force

The muffs go over the water inlets-- should have a screen on them-- Another thing you want to do before taking it out is to drain and refill the lower unit gear oil-- That is what the vent screw is for-- You should see a drain screw near the bottom of the lower unit--take out the vent screw, then the drain plug (with a pan to catch the quart of two of gear oil) -- once it all drains pump new gear oil into the drain hole until it starts running out the vent hole- then put the vent screw back in-and then the drain plug back in-- Check manual for gear wt- but probably 80w90 marine lower unit oil is what you need--

phew thats what i thought,i have a yam 8hp but top screw is for water but i was not sure on american terminology and thought if in doubt don't do it but muffs i have(that came with the boat)fit vent screw but not water intake so that was why the uncertanty,i have plenty of hypoid 90 gear oil and also a bottle of pro-long transmission/drive additive(a friction reducer)are they a no-no.mmmmmmm sounds messy refilling.

Re: help with a crysler 50 EL force

You should be able to find a pump with a screw fitting that screws into your drain hole, this makes it not so messy, also once you put in the vent plug it creates a vaccuum so when you take out the hose from the bottom hole usually nothing comes out!
