Hi Jparker

It could sound like its heating up.

Not to be rude, but it could sound like you are about to ruin your motor by lack of service. It has signs of getting hot/seizing which is very bad to pistons/cylinders, and probably needs a carb clean/rebuild. When was the last time water pump/impeller was changed, it should every other year ? If yo dont have a manual, i suggest you to buy one or get one from library, job isnt very difficult. I wouldnt advise you to run it before cooling problem is solved.

Re: help with a 1975 johnson 65hp

Hi again Jparker 70

I just gave your problem a couple of extra thoughts. The reasons for your problem can be several.
1: your cooling must work. If you dont know the impeller was changed within the last two years - do it. If it is the old cast pumphousing and its been in salt water, it will need a complete pump set. If the impeller should be fresh, try to clean the hose and pee-hole - maybe blocked by insects or so.
2:Has this motor sat ? If it has, it probably needs a carb clean, or better rebuild due to its age, jets can get a little varnished every year. Can you hold your hand on powerhead for 2-5 seconds without getting burned when it starts acting like it dies ? If you can it isnt heating up. If it does you have to check thermostat as well.
3:If above doesnt help, check compression. On a motor like your it should be around 120 - 150, but at least boyond 100 and within 10 PSI an all three. Do a little work and post back.

jparker,

Water is not supposed to spray out the lower unit to mid section joint. I suspect whomever did your water pump did not do it right.
