I just purchased a 1996 bayliner jazz 120xrand it has a mercury sport jet 120 hp in it. Took it to the lake today and runs great but when you are cruising about 20 mph it does fine but when you run wide open it acts like it goes out of water or in neutral. It will start back fine but cant run it wide open.

?Does the engine cut off or does the boat just trim way up and just go no where??

Answer: The boat just revs way up and goes no where??

?Is there any vibration at full throttle??

Answer: When it revs up and doesn?t go anywhere, yes. Then I ease back the throttle and it moves right along at 15-20.

I took this to the shop for inspection, prior to launching, and the gave it the OK. Replaced fluids, tune-up, etc.

UPDATE: Re: Help With 96 Bayliner Jazz - Can't Go Faster Than 20

Ride Plate was missing 6 of 10 screws. Correct me if I'm wrong, is the "RIde plate" the rectangle plate, surrounding the water intake?

When do you consider replacing? Front end, looking down, corner was raised about a half inch. Looks like it pop off of the scews, although the screws are gone.

The plate has what I consider some minor inconsistencies if you look at it symetrically. With some MAPP Gas, patience, and a wood mallet, I can definately improve it.

So when would you bail, and buy a new plate?

Bent ride plate is your performance problem , your decision to quit and spend 400 on a new one , if you can straighten it it will be fine but it must fit flush with no gaps !!

This is the result of running the boat out of water without the flush kit , See the first post in this section " Sport Jet Basics and info" for information on running the boat out of water !!!

I had only four ride plate screws maybe half a turn loose and had identical problem. Tightened em up and 45mph all day!:) Also, I'm new to this forum and I don't mean to use your post to ask a question, but I cant 4 the life of me figure out how to post my own questions? I'm a first time boat owner, inherited my dad's 1996 jazz 120xr and at present it only has 22 hours on it, and has been garaged for 13 years, its showroom shape! and I have many questions. If you or anyone could help me out it would be much appreciated!
