I have a 1991 Dynatrak bass boat with a 115hp Mercury outboard and the steering is terrible. It is so stiff you can hardly turn it. I have greased it, cleaned the rod and greased it again, but nothing has changed. If I need a new cable, how do I go about getting a direct replacement, length, type, etc. Please help!!!!:

1st you have to determine which helm you have, rack or rotary, 99% chance it is a teleflex, as the controll the market. then that will determine the method of replacement. when you remove the connection at the motor does the wheel turn freely, and the motor move freely? the top is a rotary helm the bottom is a rack helm.

Re: Help with '91 Dynatrak Steering!!!!!!!!!!!

The big killer is bends in the steering cable. They work well with two gentle curves. Add curves and bends and it quickly gets stiff. The worst is when the cable is too long and they drag it back to fit which puts in a S curve. You don't say that you have it but dual cable steering can be tough too.

The cure for all the above situations is hydraulic steering. Oil doesn't care how many bends it has to go around. But just don't be misled, regular hydraulic steering is not power steering like on your car.

It Has The Rotary Helm On It. I Suppose That This Is The Original Cable That Is On It. I Would Like To Know If There Are Some Numbers On It And Where Do You Buy A Direct Replacement?

There'll be the Length written on the outer sheath somewhere near 1 end or the other.....

I wouldn't bother with Just the cable,....
As Complete Helm,+ Cable is only a few dollars more.......
