Help - Wiring?

Re-Assembling this motor and I have 1 wire I don't have a clear picture as to where it belongs.
The boat is a '77 Sea Ray (SRV 197) w/ 5 litre Chevy/Mercruiser (Alpha 1).

It's the purple wire coming out of the wiring harness (w/ the 2 red wires). Looks like it's to be attached to the distibuter w/ the black wire (black wire w/ the yellow connectors is a jumper that's going from the distributer to the negative side of the coil).
Thoughts on the purple?
Does it go to the distributer terminal w/ the black wire?
Not any other options I can see given the limited length of the wire?
Tachometer lead I assume?
Re: Help - Wiring?

Laddies,
Thanks.

But, the purple wire is WAY too short to reach either coil terminal (assuming the coil had been rotated). This part of the wiring 'appears' to be stock factory.

I had taken detailed pics of the motor before disassembly and what you see in the pic is as before. The previous motor started/ran without a problem, don't remember if the tach registered though.

Questions:
Is the black jumper correct? ie: Distributer terminal to negative side of coil? (just as was when I bought the boat)
What is the purple? Tach?

Re: Help - Wiring?

To find out what wire that actually goes to, you are going to have to get a wiring diagram for whatever Mercruser model number you have. The link that Ralph gave you won't work because they changed color coding way after your engine was made.
