How would I go about wiring my stereo to work when the ignition is off?

Currently, it only works when the engine is running or ignition is in the On position. I want it to work like the bilge and navigation lights and to come on with the flip of a switch. Also I want to add a second battery to not drain the battery.

Newbie to electrical so bare with me. How would I go about doing this?

Couple of options for the radio. Prefered option would just be to simply run a couple of new wires back to the battery ( don't forget the fuse ). Second option would be to pick up power from one of the previously mentioned devices.

As for the dual batteries. This is a little more expensive ( to do it right ). You will need a "dual battery charging system". This is basically a harness to connect the two batteries together. It allows your single alternator to charge both batteries without damaging your alternator.

Run your power and ground to the fuse panel, NEVER the ignition switch.
Wiring directly to the battery is Not the way to do it.

That said, without knowing what boat, motor, battery setup or anything else, we have no clue what to tell you.

With the second battery installed, run a positive and negative wire from the battery to the where the radio is. You will then split that power wire into two leads, one lead will connect directly to the radios 12v battery wire (always hot) and there should be a fuse somewhere in that line, likely one is included on the radio wire itself. Next you will need a toggle switch, the second lead will run to the toggle switch source terminal. You will also split the ground wire into two leads with one leading to the stereo and one to the toggle switch. Next you run the output wire from the toggle switch to the radio. Drill a hole next to the radio and install the toggle switch. Now when you want to turn your radio on, you can use the toggle switch to simulate turning the key on, but the radio will not lose memory because the always hot wire is connected directly to the battery. You can go one step further and purchase a 12v digital voltage indicator from amazon for about $10 bucks. Tie this into the output wire from the toggle switch that powers the radio and install it in the dash next to the toggle switch, when you turn the toggle on to use the radio, you voltage indicator will display the voltage on the battery so that you can monitor the battery level/tell if the battery is charging...

Note that if your toggle switch will need to be rated to handle whatever load is expected of it, if it is just a small toggle, you can utilize a standard bosche relay in the circuit to feed the radio..

Amazing how complicated this can be made to be. Grounds do not belong on a toggle switch unless that switch has an internal light in which case that is what the ground is for, not the stereo. Does not the stereo have an ON/OFF button? Never saw one that didn't!!! So why include another switch? The excuse for doing this is generally, I can't remember to turn off the radio. Well, if that's the case, then why not include a MASTER switch on the console that turns off everything -- which is the way many boats are wired these days. Every fuse panel normally has a one or two empty slots for added circuits. Connect BOTH the memory and +12 volt lines to the +12 volt feed from the fuse panel. Connect the ground wire to the nearest ground (for example the ground buss on the fuse panel if there is one). Insert the fuse in the empty slot and go boating. This is a 10 minute job.

Radios are also usually in an enclosure and power buttons on radios are sort of a joke. Using a toggle switch is clean and easy and you don't need to open up the enclosure to turn it on or off. The light on the toggle lets you know it's on/off. By the way, toggle switches cost about 4 bucks and take ten minutes to install, I would call that pretty easy.

This is the way I would prefer to do it because its hard to tell if the radio is on/off because of its location.

You probably have an acc. switch on your panel right now, with nothing on it. Just hook you red power wire for your stereo to it. Keep the inline fuse in your stereo wiring and hook your stereo's black wire to the negative ground buss.

EDIT: Just checked, you should already have wiring on the boat for a stereo. Get a manual here http://searay.com/Page.aspx/pageId/10411/Owners-Manuals.aspx then go to the wiring diagrams and look at your boat.
