help! What is this part??

Just dropped the my Alpha to change the impeller and after I pulled the lower unit and set it off to the side,I saw this laying underneath the outdrive. I,ve done the impeller before and dont recall this plate! Anyone know what it is? I cant for the life of me see where it came from or where it goes.

Ayuh,... That's the remnants of the exhaust shutter...

It's supposed to be complete, 'n in the top of the down pipe, just aft of the riser...

My guess is it's been run without water flow at some point, burnin' it up...

Bond-0 thanks. I just got back from the shop and you hit it on the head! I bought a replacement shutter and grommets. About 6 yrs ago the engine overheated due to the impeller failing. They said it may have been hung up in there all this time and now just fell out. On the 3.0s,is this a major worry,since the boat has been used since with no problem? They did tell me what is purpose is so I know it should be replaced. They said the easiest way is removing the exhaust manifold which I,ve done before. And better and easier ways that you know of? Thanks again guys!

In my V-8 boats, that part is in the pipe coming off the riser. AllI have to do is remove the rubber exhaust elbow (4 worm clamps) I would think yours is the same. Look at a diagram of the exhause in the sticky section at the top and see.

Thanks AZ....as soon as I get the lower unit back on I,ll check the stickys!
