help w/lower unit removal-84 johnson 150

I have been trying to remove the l/u and it seems to be hanging up on the shift shaft. I tried moving the gear selector to see if this would release it but no luck. I am reasonably mechanicaly inclined, but not familiar with outboards. Can anyone share step-by-step instructions?

hi betwixed, look under the bottom carburetor, there is a linkage with a bolt facing one side, remove the bolt and that should release your shift shaft.
