I've purchased this motor and I noticed that the water tell tale does not produce a steady stream. It will pee good and hard for a little while then go to a dribble then pee good and hard again...so on and so on. My experience with outboards is they should have a steady stream. When I replaced the impeller I checked the plate and impeller housing and they didn't seem to be worn and the key on the shaft is good. I've checked the screens on the foot and they aren't clogged. I've blown air up the pipe and out the pee hole and from the pee hole back and can hear air coming out the screens on the foot nothing is stopped up. Does anyone have any other suggestions or know whats going on with this thing ???

I am not possitive on this on, I dont have a newer style motor, but I have heard that the newer style engines have thermastats that regulate water temp. so that it will "pee" only when nessecary. May want to ask around some more, or get these other guys to comment. Most of these guys on here have rock solid advise.

good luck.

Waco, thanks for replying. I thought the tell tale was suppose to pee all the time to let you know the water pump was doing its thing. I hope one of the guys with experience on a new model Mercury engines will respond. Thanks again.

Should have a steady stream always...pull t-stat, put in pot of water, turn on heat, and observe it opening fully. Sounds like defective impeller or possibly a piece of old impleller is floating around someplace, clogging it up ocassinally. I've experienced this on a Merc. 90 HP. Good luck

E.F. what you are experiencing is perfectly normal... the thermostat is cycling open and closed, causing the change in tell-tale flow....it is a little worrisome at first, but how merc made them.....you will only have a dribble until the motor warms up.

ODD1 is right. If you had an H2O prees. guage, you'd see the fluctuation.

It all depends on where the tell tale hole is plumbed.

I have a 97 Mariner 25hp.....same as merc...different color. I posted the same question on mine. I got the same reply....it does put out alot of water when the rpms are up. I love this little motor....got it as a display a year ago....never started for 600. It just runs and runs!!

Wily

All, not that I doubted anyone here but I called Mercury Customer Service and explained what was going on to them. THey dug up a manual and said (just as ODDD1 said) that its perfectly normal for that engine. That its the thermostat opening and closing. I just thought it was strange because I've never seen an outboard with a tell-tale's water stream go soft and strong like that unless something was wrong with it. ANYWAY, just thought I would pass that on.
