I took it to the lake today for a short ride. I noticed the engine was almost like cutting off on idle and I went to check out the engine compartment when I noticed a white milky combination of water and oil coming up the top of the engine. I winterized the boat last fall and I thought I marked the inlet and outlet hoses that go into the cooling system right. Anyway, I think I screwed it up by switching the inlet and outlet hoses before I took the boat to the lake. I would like to confirm how they are attached. The hose connected to the lowest pump fitting, does it go up or does it go towards the back of the engine and then up? Is there a diagram of this setup I can find on the web? Also, if this is the what caused the mix of water and oil do I have a blown gasket, cracked block or do I have to flush all this mess from the engine and correct the hoses. I don't think the engine overheated. The dipstick is all the way to the top with oil and water mixed.

Thank you for your advise.

Sounds like a cracked block or Exhaust manifold to me.

Switching the hoses will not cause your problem. If milky oil is coming out of the "Top of the engine" then you have a cracked block. Normally due to improper winterization. Depending on your Volvo, it could also be the intake manifold has cracked. Also caused by not following the intructions in the manual. You do have the manual don't you?

I winterized the boat by following the manual steps. Removed the hoses and screws on the back of manifold and block. I saw all the water gush out... I this is the cause I would be surprised.

I would suggest blown head gasket. Take it to a shop and let a mechanic look at it :)

Pressure test the engine and manifolds.
