When I shift into reverse the drive jumps up and and then drops down. Since the boat is berthed and I don't have a trailer I can't see the problem. Can somebody help me out? What is the common cause of this?

Usually, (if there is not a lot of barnicales and other marine critteres growing under there), the lock down paws (Item 5 in the pic) are rounded over and not allowing the drive to lock down on the cross pin (item 4). There is a lockdown kit available from Volvo.

9 times out of 10 its just crud. Get down there with a stiff brush and clean the growing stuff off. I use a lot of white grease on mine before putting it in for the summer.
