I think I seized my motor this weekend. We were tubing when I hear this nasty noise, so I slowed down and she stalled. Then we enjoyed a relaxing paddle across the lake back to the marina. The motor will not turn over, tried pulling on the belt and still couldnt budge it. It seemed to be running pretty hot, but I'm not sure as my temp gauge is broken.
1980 Volve penta 145a, volvo 280 stern drive. replaced head gasket last summer and rocker cover seal last weekend.

Re: Help!! Volvo 145A had a seizure

Running a boat without a temp gauge is about 100 times worse than running a car without one. Cooling problems are probably the best way to ruin a marine motor whether it's from overheating, no raw water or bad exhaust manifolds leaking water into the motor.

You probably won't be able to turn the motor over using the belts with the plugs in. Try removing them and use a ratchet on the crank pulley without stripping the threads on the crank. That will let you know if the motor is siezed or not. Then if it's not siezed, you have to figure out what caused the sound and stalling and why it won't crank.

Thanks 95yj maybe thats why I couldnt turn it over I'll pull the plugs and try again. I think it all started from a bad rad cap, and ya I was working on replacing the temp gauge and sensor. Guess I dont have to worry about that now!

It is just as likely if not more so to be the drive that locked up

I would drain the oil and check for metal and other nasty stuff

Nope not the drive, the prop spins fine. I just pulled the plugs and tried turninig the crankshaft with a rachet and it's seized. So I'm going to tear it down. hopefully it's just a bearing. Thanks for the help. I'll post pics if anyone wants to see.

Since you have to pull the drive to pull the motor, just for giggles, pull the drive and then see if you can turn the motor over by hand. While the drive is off, put it in forward and see if you can turn the driveshaft or prop.

Ok I'll do that before I take the head off, but I've never had the drive off, any tricks I should know or links to how-to articles? Thanks.

Re: Help!! Volvo 145A had a seizure

Ok I took the drive apart. The upperdrive assembly works fine the universals had some water in them but they werent too worn. everything works in F,N,R . I can spin the prop and watch the drive shaft turn. Although I did notice it's warped/ spins off axis. I still cant turn the engine over so I assume I've cleared all other possible culprits and I'm down to the crankshaft now. am I screwed and looking at replacing the engine/ stern drive or does anyone thing this would be worth rebuilding?

a late update, the engine wasnt seized, a spring from the damper plate broke and fell out jamming itself between the flywheel and the bellhousing. it was the last thing i took apart!!!!
