Hello, I've been trying for hours to remove the flywheel on this 1977, Johnson, 85 HSP. I've broken two rachet handles and cracked the puller!! It moves a little each turn. I just went and bought another puller. Thought I'd ask for any hints, tips or suggestions before I get a hernia! PS: The flywheel nut needed heating and a slight tap with a hammer to loosen. This boat/motor has been sitting for at least a year. Thanks in advance.

I have not had you experience before, but I would suggest continued patience, a wheel puller that fits correctly, go easy on the heat, (rubber crankshaft seals nearby) An if all else fails, purchase some dry ice and get it really cold. Good Luck

I WOULD ADVISE YOU TO USE A IMPACT GUN . HAD THE SAME PROBLEM TRYING TO REMOVE THE 1 1/16 NUT ON THE FLYWHEEL DID'T BREAK ANY WRENCHES; BUT IT WAS NOT GOING ANYWERE UNTIL I USED THE IMPACT GUN CAME WRIGHT OFF ALSO 11/16 ON THE PULLER NO PROBLEM

another hint would be to get an good bind on puller....then use an air hammer with a blunt end to vibrate the puler and flywheel.....lot better than heat too....just an good jar is all thats needed not brut force......

Re: Help! Trying to remove 85 Johnson Flywheel

Hi LoneWolf, impact gun?? You mean with a compressor? I don't have one. I loosened it enough to free up the spark advance which was my intention in the beginning although I was curious to what condition everything was beneath the flywheel looked like. I tightened the flywheel back up. One other problem I found is the compression check showed low in one of the four cylinders. What harm other than running at say 60 HSP instead of 85 would it do to the motor if I ignored that possible piston/ring, cylinder problem and ran it on three cylinders for several hours (instead of four), than this fall I'll donate the whole boat/motor/trailer to the Boy Scouts!!! I'm serious! Thanks again.
