Helping a friend with an early-80s Honda BF75... it won't idle, and looks like there's a problem somewhere in the fuel system.

All the lines have been replaced with transparent line so we can see what's going on.

Replaced fuel pump today after leaving it for a few months... we think maybe we didn't run it dry last time we looked at it so part of the problem may be that the carb had guck in it. But generally it's only running at nearly full throttle and just dies if we try to put it down to an idle. It looks like the fuel pump isn't working, as there's barely anything getting to the filter - but there must be enough because at full throttle it runs no problem.

We're going to pull the carb off and give it a good clean but we did that earlier and it didn't help. I'm not optimistic that even with a new fuel pump it'll work right.

Any ideas of other things to look at?

I don't know anything about the carb you'll be working on, but experience has taught me that the idle jet can be REALLY small on some Honda carbs. Like the size of a human hair. Look for that one, and make darn sure it's clean - or you'll be taking it apart again to do it right. This one is so tough many techs won't mess with them, preferring to buy new ones to save time and minimize the potential for repeat removal.
