Hello All,
Total newbie to group and boat purchasing. Need all your input as to whether to purchase a '00 Trophy 2002WA or a '97 Sunbird Neptune 212WA; both are private sales and similar price of $14000. Looking for durability, reliability, and dependability over the long haul. Saw a couple '92 Grady Whites that stood out but wanted to stick with something somewhat newer.

This would be my 1st boat purchase after renting a 19' Triumph CC every summer on vacation for far too many years. Figuring both offer reasonable fishing platform as well as the occasional pleasure riding/possible overnight with head facilities available for my wife (certainly her first priority).

The Trophy has trim tabs, full enclosure, 150 Merc Saltwater, and supposedly about 150 hrs on motor. In relatively nice shape with mostly the need for a good compound/wax and bottom paint redone. Single axle bunk trailer with brakes.

The Neptune has been stored inside with valet water drop service and looks immaculate - basically new w/o any bottom paint. Also has extremely low hours (less than 100) with Johnson 150 ocean /salt water, full enclosure. Does not come with trailer. Owner suggests you can find used trailer for about $600 but I have not found any at that price for anything you would want to safely travel any distance with - I was figuring more like $1000-$1300 used for dual axle.

I need to have come to a decision within the next couple days and follow thru on the final purchase. So please, all you experienced guys could you possibly help me out.

Thanks in advance, kind regards,
brian a

Re: HELP! - Trophy or Neptune???

the dull finish on the trophy, leads me to believe it's been stored outdoors, and quiet a bit uncovered. thus possible rot in the future.

the indoor Netune sounds like the deal, even without the trailer. and definately dual axle with brakes both axles. we bought a 30' trailer last year for our 23' Chris Craft. aluminum, looked like new $2500.

Re: HELP! - Trophy or Neptune??? - Dry Rot

Re: HELP! - Trophy or Neptune??? - Dry Rot

Hey daddy,
Thanks for the info. Are you saying that the core of the Trophy is wood under or in the fiberglass when referring to potential dry rot? If so, is that what I have been reading when people buying a boat complain about "soft spots"?

thanks again, and any other help/opinions from others would be greatly appreciated,

Whichever boat you prefer, a professional survey is in order.

KCook,
Can you give me an idea of what a survey / inspection would cost for a 20' boat?
thanks,

Re: HELP! - Trophy or Neptune???

90 % of boats built today have a wooden substructure. wood stringer, floor, transom, encapsulated in fiberglass. when that glass cracks, and you get water intrusion, you get rot. equals weak bones. SOFT SPOTS.

Bought 1st Boat!!!

Bought 1st Boat!!!

hello all,
i would like to thank those who shared their insights and responses to my post. with your help and encouragement i did the right thing and spent the pre-purchase $ to hire a marine surveyor. he gave the Trophy flying colors all the way around and informed me i had found a great deal about $4000 below fair market value which made me very relieved and happy. i have read the bayliner bashing here already so when i say he gave it flying colors, i am talking about the actual condition of this particular boat, not whether bayliner in general is an acceptable boat to all people.

i figure the survey ultimately represents 2.5% of the total purchase price which to me is peanuts when you consider what nightmare you may have had if you just bought in good faith (or some would say ignorant stupidity) on the owners word which could end up costing thousands.

so again, my thanks and best wishes to those willing to share their expertise.
