HELP!! Trim motor runs and wont stop

I am new to the big boating world. Just bouught a 96 Hydra sport 173E with the 115 fast strike Johnson v4 outboard. I have yet to start the engine. When I hook up the battery after a few seconds the trim motor comes on and runs steady. the outboard is all the way up. When I push on the up button on the motor the noise stops. When I push on the down button it continues to run. I only let it runs for a few second because I am afraid of burning up the motor. The motor went up about an inch once but has not moved since. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

you have 2 relays on the motor in a smal box under the hood the a stuck in on take them out and get 2 new ones

OMC had probs back in those days with the t/t switches both on the cowl and in the throttle handle doing this. That could also be your prob.

I had similar problems with mine too on a 1986 225, and the fix(for me) was to undo the connector that goes from the tilt motor to wire harness inside cowling, and eject the blade terminals from the connector and remove the coupling terminals from the other side and wire brush them until shiny. The female couplers are hard to clean since it is just a sliver...I used a jeweler's screwdriver to scratch the inside of the couplers until they were shiney. Could have been coincidence, cuz I don't see how corroded terminals would make the motor tilt up by itself, but it did, and it did with new relays.

I tried new relays too and it didn't work...now I have two extra relays just in case.

Wouldn't hurt to take apart your throttle and clean up the tilt switch up there too.

Well, I replaced both relays and the problem still persists. i narrowed it down to the trim switch on the wheel. When the harness for the front trim switch ( front of boat and wheel) is disconnected it does not happen. I can use the controls on the outboard with no issues. I can use the switch at the front of the boat when the harness is connected with no problems. when I use the switch at the wheel it brings the motor up and continues to run unless i push the down on the other swithces. the trim motor just cuts out, outboard does not move. I am going to try to replace the wheel switch. I will update you all once I get that far. Thanks for the help fellas.
