Help to identify the water pump kit part

I'm rebuilding water pump on new to me 1993 Johnson 3hp outboard. I received repair kit 431785 and can't find a place where to install the small o-ring that came with it (between grommet, empeller and housing plate on the image below). I also don't see where that o-ring goes on the diagram in the manual. By the size it should fit on the driveshaft somewhere but for the love of god I can't find a place for it. Please let me know where it goes?

I am ABSOLUTELY NOT an expert, but I'd bet that kit fits more then 1 motor and its not uncommon to have parts included that arent used on every application.

Others should be along to correct me, if necessary, and point you in the right direction

There is an O-ring used on the shift rod for models with the 5" extension (not on the rod for the regular shaft model) -- part number 321357. It would have a smaller diameter than you suggest in your post (driveshaft), but might be the mystery part in the kit.

Many motors have a groove around the top end of the drive shaft for an oring to keep water out of the splines. Don't know if this applies to the 1993 though. Maybe they include one in the kit for motors that do use it.

The same kit is supplied for 3 and 4 hp models from 1987 to 2006. Some have an O ring at the top of the drive shaft as F_R describes. The 1993 3 hp does not
